At First Service Bank, serving our communities goes far beyond banking. Through Operation Red, White & Brave (ORWB), we have the privilege of stepping in when veterans and their families face unexpected hardships, and recently, that mission came to life in a powerful way right here in Greenbrier.
A local family, after 24 years of active military service, purchased the first home they had ever owned. Years of relocations during military service meant renting was their only option, until now. What should have been a milestone moment quickly turned into a crisis.
Shortly after moving in, toxic mold began spreading throughout the home. The health effects were severe. The entire family became ill, and the veteran’s wife experienced serious heart complications, later confirmed to be linked to mold exposure. Doctors determined the home was unsafe, forcing the family to move out immediately.
With no other option, they began renting while still paying a mortgage, suddenly responsible for two households. During this time, the veteran, who conducts federal background investigations on behalf of the U.S. government, was impacted by a government shutdown that disrupted income. As expenses mounted, the family faced the very real possibility of losing their home and damaging their financial future.
This is where Operation Red, White & Brave stepped in.
Through ORWB, we were able to:
- Bring the family current on their mortgage
- Cover utilities and rental costs
- Begin full toxic mold remediation of the home
The house will be stripped down to ensure it is safe, walls removed, materials replaced, but the most important outcome is this: the family will be able to move back home.
The next phase of this project will focus on restoring the home so it is livable again. With the help of partners and volunteers, materials such as sheetrock, paint, and supplies will be secured, and hands will be on the ground to help finish what was started.
This is what Operation Red, White & Brave exists to do, meet real needs, restore stability, and stand beside those who have spent their lives protecting others.
