Greenbrier, AR: After just 8 months of community fundraising, First Service Bank announced they raised the required $80,000 needed to build their very first Habitat for Humanity home, the focus of their Operation Red, White, and Brave campaign.
“When Habitat learned we had reached our goal so quickly, they were sort of in shock,” said Tom Grumbles, president & CEO of the bank. “We had some amazing support from our bank customers and the local community. We couldn’t be prouder of what they helped us accomplish in record time.”
The bank broke ground on the property at 4300 11th Street in Little Rock on August 16th, and initial construction is set to begin soon. A homeowner has been named following a rigorous application process. He is Darryl Jerome Walker, an Army veteran who is employed as a night clerk at Saint Francis House, a temporary shelter for homeless veterans.
When construction begins, the crew will include bank staff, bank customers, professional builder volunteers, as well as Walker. As part of his new homeowner agreement, he will put in 300 hours of sweat equity toward the build and is required to take a course in the basics of homeownership, including how to manage mortgage payments, budgeting, and other homeowner responsibilities.
The average Habitat home in the U.S. — a 1,200-square-foot house with three bedrooms — takes 150 pounds of nails and 400 two-by-fours.
Grumbles said they hope to complete the build and hand the keys to Walker by the end of the year. A key ceremony will be held to mark the very special occasion with details to come at a later date.

About Habitat for Humanity of Central Arkansas
Habitat for Humanity builds houses in partnership with Central Arkansas individuals and families in need. Volunteer labor is used to keep building costs low, and Habitat homeowners make a monthly payment on an affordable mortgage. They also invest hundreds of hours of their own labor—sweat equity—into building their own houses and the houses of others. Habitat homeowner payments go into a revolving fund that helps build houses with other families. Since its start in 1989, Habitat has built over 200 new homes in Pulaski and Lonoke counties and rehabbed over 600 homes through their Neighborhood Revitalization program.
